Six Foot Four with Alan Brough at the ABC - 15th Feb
: Chorus news item
: Tue, 17 Feb 2009
Description: Following an email to request that Alan promote our March 16 Guest Night on his Sunday Morning show, we were invited to send in a quartet to sing and talk about the Guest Night. President Peter Canet came with us to answer the questions. The Six Foot Four quartet sang "It's Only a Paper Moon", "I'm Gonna Live 'Til I Die" and "You Make Me Feel So Young". Check out the photo of Six Foot Four - from left, Ian Lushey (lead), Lecky Webster (tenor) Alan Brough, Steve Carnie (bass), Doug Moody (baritone) - in Alan's ABC studio.

If you like to sing and can hold a note, you will not want to miss our Guest Night. Our Chorus will sing some of our repertoire songs, and there will be some quartet items. We will explain a little about barbershop harmony, which is the style of close harmony that our Chorus sings, and answer any questions you may have. We will invite you to join the Chorus to learn a song (nothing too hard) and welcome you to our friendly group. We will even supply a light supper. All this will cost you nothing.

One of the good things about singing with an all-male Chorus is that you have the opportunity to sing the melody line if that is your preference and you have the appropriate voice-type. We call the men who sing the melody line our "leads". The men with the lowest voices (basses) sing the low notes. The men who can sing the high notes, often in falsetto or boy soprano style sing a harmonising note above the leads. Our baritones sing a "second tenor" part that is sometimes above and sometimes below the leads. The harmonising notes rarely have more than a 12-note spread so it's "close harmony".

Our repertoire consists of the popular songs from past years. We strive to maintain a repertoire of about 20 songs plus special-occasion songs. When we perform, we sing without music.

If you like to sing and can hold a note in a Chorus we can teach you the techniques required to blend your voice with the rest of the team. you don't need to be a trained singer. You don't have to be able to read music but any past singing experience and musical training is helpful. We will teach you the extra thing you need to know.

This is a healthy hobby that will keep your mind and body active. You will be working with a friendly group of men from all walks of life. We welcome men of all ages. Active men in the later years of their working life often find Chorus singing the ideal hobby.
